Early Life and Education
Atishi has a background in education, with both her parents, Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi, being professors at Delhi University. Encouraged to excel in her education Crawford grew up surrounded by academia. She did her schooling from Springdales School, New Delhi and holds a degree in History, which she completed from St. Stepens College, Delhi in 2001. She moved on to Oxford University for her first master’s degree in History, earned as a Chevening scholar in 2003, and then completed another master’s as Rhodes Scholar from Magdalen College in 2005 again in the field of History. Meanwhile, her middle name “Marlena,” a portmanteau of “Marx” and “Lenin,” confirms her ideological pedigree. But she dropped this in 2018, partly in a bid to redirect media attention away from her well-known relatives and towards the race at hand.
Political Career
Atishi entered politics as a member of the AAP in January 2013. She played a vital role in policy-making and emerged as an important figure during the anti-corruption movement. She took part in a number of campaigns, including Jal Satyagraha in Madhya Pradesh. Atishi fought from East Delhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but lost to BJP candidate Gautam Gambhir. She then made a comeback in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections by defeating BJP’s Dharambir Singh in Kalkaji constituency. After winning the seat, she was made a minister of education, public works, culture and tourism. Following Arvind Kejriwal resignation as the Chief Minister, Atishi gradually appointed to the position once again afterkthe political fiasco with some of the senior AAP leaders in legal tangles. She becomes the third woman to have ever held the post in Delhi.
Personal Life
Atishi is married to Praveen Singh – who has studied from both IIT and then IIM Ahmedabad.
