Path to Politics
Yechury was born on August 12, 1952 in Chennai to a Telugu-speaking family. Born and raised in Hyderabad, Madhav became politically active while studying at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) when he joined Students Federation of India(SFI). Yechury was among those arrested during the Emergency and a leading student leader (elected president of the JNU Students’ Union thrice).
He became a member of the CPI(M) in 1975 and was elected to Rajya Sabha from West Bengal in 2005. Yechury discussed several important aspects and made valuable contributions to the left movement during his parliamentarian days.
Play a key Role in Coalition politics
Yechury is credited with his efforts in coalitions, specifically during the formation of a UPA government when Manmohan Singh became Prime Minister in 2004. He has also gained prominence through my earlier work in composing the common minimum programme for a United Front government way back in 1996 along with P. Chidambaram, something that helped bridge some differences between Left and progressive forces at one stage but donned off experience showing its real teeth! He continued to criticise the policies of Union government.
Recent Developments
Earlier this day, Yechury not in hospital and posted on social media Tweeting remembering former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya. He also expressed his support for political parties in Jammu and Kashmir before elections are to be held.
The CPM had, earlier in the day reported that Yechury was stable now but his condition has worsened and he is critically ill on Life Support System (Ventilation).
